Nigerian researchers contributed over 1,200 published basic and applied COVID-19 researches since the pandemic hit the country, the Nigeria COVID-19 Research Coalition (NCRC) has said.
The coalition made the disclosure in a communique issued after its research colloquium in Abuja with the theme, “Two Years on: Gains, Losses and Lessons in Nigeria’s COVID-19 Research.”

The coalition said the COVID-19 research was in the areas of epidemiological studies, virus natural history, transmission and diagnostics, animal and environmental research on the virus origin, and management measures at the human-animal interface.
It listed others as infection prevention and control including healthcare workers protection, clinical management, candidate vaccines research and development among others.
However, the coalition said funding for research remained extremely poor in the country. It decried the significant lag in research outputs from Africa.
