The National Universities Commission (NUC) has recognized the upgrade of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto to University of Education, Sokoto.
This makes it the 58th State university and 206th university in Nigeria.

Presenting the certificate of recognition on Monday in Abuja, to the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Adamu Rasheed, said the Shehu Shagari University also becomes the first university of education in northern Nigeria & 4th of its kind in the country.
In his remark, Tambuwal said the university is a specialised one and will focus on entrepreneurship and functional and effective education.
He said: “The university will produce graduates that will be self-reliant and create employment to help in empowerment and human capital development of the people of Sokoto State.”
He added that the university already passed recommendations of upgrade before the Sokoto State House of Assembly, adding that the state had complied with all necessary documentation.
The governor, however, said he will not relent in providing the necessary financial assistance required for the growth of the university.
