After five years in detention, a Kaduna State High Court discharged and acquitted him and his wife, Zeenat, last year.
The duo stood trial on eight counts charges bordering on alleged criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide punishable with death, wrongful restraint, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace, inciting disturbance and breach of peace.
But the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) had denied the allegations.
El-Zakzaky said, “I hope to return to Zaria some time in the future, to build on my religious activities.
“People have been carrying me since soldiers damaged my left thigh and left hand; I am not saying a fracture; I mean damage. Four soldiers rained gunshots inside the small room we were in; they asked me to remove my clothes; when I refused, one of them said fire. And the rest opened fire on us. And in the process, the whole house was razed.”
El-Zakzaky alleged that the soldiers were sent by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He added, “They were there based on the order of the president. He said I was forming a government within a government.”
