The Development Control Department of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, (AMMC) will this week begin demolition of many structures at the popular Utako viallge.
Over 35 structures would also be removed at 2nd avenue in Gwarimpa Estate.
Ahead of the demolition exercise, the department yesterday embarked on sensitization of the residents that will be affected.
According to the director, Department of Development Control, Tpl Mukthar Usman Galadima, the agency visited Utako village again to sensitize the residents on the forthcoming demolishing for them to evacuate their valuables before the exercise.
He said the Nigerian police force had a plot of more than two hectares at Utako village and had submitted their design to develop the plot.
“We have processed their demand and granted approval to them to commence development. So they involved us in the whole process of negotiation and compensation to the people affected.
“But we thought it is wise and important to sensitize the people occupying the area so that it won’t be given a kind of coloration,’’ he said.
The director stated that the agency had followed due process in the exercise by meeting with the people to express its intention.
“We have marked those structures already and why we went there today is to tell them that we are coming and if things went planned we will be there Wednesday (today) and Thursday,” he said.
Mr. Galadima also said that the agency was set to demolish some more than 30 structures built along the natural stream channels on the 2nd Avenue of Gwarimpa Federal Housing Estate in order to ensure the safety and protect wellbeing of the citizens.
“Looking at that place you could see a stream channel that is gradually being conscripted by those so-called corner shops,’’ he added.
