Daily Trust Foundation urges journalists to humanise crime reports

The Daily Trust Foundation has challenged journalists on using multimedia techniques in reporting and humanizing crime reports.
Speaking on Monday in Abuja during a 2-day training for journalists across the country on “Understanding Crime Reporting”, Editor-in-Chief of Daily Trust Newspaper, Naziru Mikailu, urged the trainees to humanise crime reports.
Mikailu, who said crime reports are real stories that affect human beings, noted that there was a need to unravel the humanity in such reports and make them more appealing to the people by taking advantage of the multimedia.
He said the organisation was interested in, and encouraging multimedia reporting, especially now that it has a TV arm and broadcast on different social media platforms.
He however stated that there were risks involved in reporting crime stories and urged journalists to be concerned about their safety, saying the training would also tackle the aspect of safety in crime reportage.
“Crime reports are real stories that affect human beings, so you have to humanise it more.
“We want to see more of these reports. There are also risks covering crime stories. We care about the story, but we care more about your safety.
“We also want to encourage multimedia reporting and see more people, especially those interested in it, go into it.
You can now pitch stories to different platforms. We have the Trust TV aside from the newspaper,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of Daily Trust, Nura Daura, said the training was part of the paper’s capacity development for journalists and commended Mac Arthur Foundation and Daily Trust for the support and training.
Daura charged the journalists to take advantage of the training to interact, share ideas and build a network for their profession.
“I thank Mac Arthur Foundation and Daily Trust for this training. Capacity development will bring about change in what you do. Change is also constant. I encourage each of you to take advantage of it and let it impact what you do.
“Since people from other media organisations are here, use this opportunity to interact and share ideas,” he stated.
Addressing the participants, the Director of Daily Trust Foundation, Dr Theophilus Abbah, urged them to go beyond the periphery of crime reportage and focus more on an in-depth analysis of the situation surrounding the crime and its effects on the people and society.
