Lagos shuts down event centre where petrol was distributed as souvenir

The Lagos State government has shut down an event centre, Havillah, after investigating a viral video that showed kegs of petrol being handed out as souvenirs at a ceremony within its premises.

Recently, a lady identified as Chidinma Pearl Ogbulu caught the attention of Nigerians on social media with her choice of souvenirs at her installation ceremony as Erelu Okin.

A video from the event captured a stack of 10-litre kegs containing petrol that had been piled up for guests who came to celebrate with her.

But reacting to the video the State’s commissioner of information and strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said “There is no doubt that this action is dangerous and can lead to loss of lives and property. It is blatantly against all safety measures in such places.

“The Lagos State Government through the Safety Commission is investigating this matter and will ensure that all parties to this reprehensible action are made to account for it.”

The party organisers’ action may not be far-fetched as Nigerians have continued to face petrol scarcity as long queues are seen in filling stations across the country.

True to the words of the Lagos State, the venue of the part has been shut down by the state government.

The senior special assistant to the Governor of Lagos State on New Media, Jubril Gawat, further said the Lagos State police commissioner has ordered the arrest of those involved.

In a Whatsapp message, the media aide simply said, “Lagos State Government through the Lagos Safety Commission and the Rapid Response Squad has sealed Havillah Event Centre, Oniru, for Contravening Public Safety Rules (Fuel Souvenir), as Lagos CP orders the arrest of culprits involved.”
