Don urges students to place priority on education courses

A Professor of Religion and Philosophy, University of Jos, Ibrahim Hassan Alwassawi, has urged newly admitted Students of Al-Iman College of Education Jos, to place priority on education courses.

Prof. Alwassawi, while delivering his speech at the matriculation ceremony of the first set of Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) students of the college recently, said Nigerians often take education courses for granted, not knowing that they were very important to the development of every society, and therefore should be taken with utmost priority.

He said each time he read the curriculum of education, he appreciated it because it was well designed to produce what was required of every trained teacher in a given teaching institute.

“There is something we don’t realize, our philosophers have always been educators and philosophers are the backbone of human civilization. If you aspire to be a philosopher, you must be a trained teacher. So, a trained teacher is different from an ordinary teacher,” he said.

While noting that those who are trained in other professions will always come to acquire NCE or other advanced education courses for better qualifications, he advised youths to change their mindset and attitudes towards the teaching profession.

Earlier in his welcome address, the provost of the college, Sheikh Dr. Muhammad Munir, vowed to ensure high moral principles among the students and the dedication of teachers to their duties.

“I urge you to live up to expectations academically, morally, and follow the rules and regulations of the college. You are expected to contribute your quota to enhancing and protecting the image of the college.

“I am confident that we have started to train teachers that would train the children of this nation in the best possible way,” he said.
