Obaseki sends bill to ban open grazing to assembly

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has sent a bill for a law to prohibit open grazing of cattle and other livestock in the state to the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA).

The law which has been passed in some southern states of Nigeria and banned the movement of cattle by herders in public places is a measure of curbing the persistent clashes between herders and farmers.

Speaking on the bill during the plenary Tuesday, Speaker Marcus Onobun said the bill had been receiving inputs from members and different stakeholders.

 He added that the bill had been slated for consideration on a later date to give room for more consultation and recommendations by members.

In a related development, a motion calling on the Edo State Government, the state’s ministry of works and other relevant agencies to apprehend unregistered vehicles and tricycles in parts of the state was also read on the floor of the house.

The sponsor of the motion, Deputy Whip and member representing Igueben constituency, Ephraim Aluebhosele, urged the house to step down the motion for more consultation and inputs from members and other stakeholders.
