The spokesperson of the command, Bello Kongtons, disclosed this on Sunday in a chat with our reporter, following a petition from the victim calling for investigation and prosecution.
Bello said he was expecting a detailed briefing from the anti-kidnapping unit of the police, adding that three persons had been arrested in connection with the matter.
Onoaghakpote, in a petition addressed to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Philip Ogbadu, dated 11th February 2022, said the suspected kidnappers were led by one Michael.
He said he was beaten and abducted at a popular hotel and lounge along Okhoro street in Benin City where he was brutalized for several hours and lost valuables worth N20m to the kidnappers.
“I am a web developer and I work with a programming company. On February 10, the said Michael requested to see me concerning a website I developed for him two years ago. But when I got there, I waited for him, only for him to appear with about twenty boys who kidnapped me with guns,” he narrated.
He said they blindfolded him, tied his hands and took him to an uncompleted building where they started beating him and forcefully took valuables from him.
He said the items stolen from him were two phones and his bank transfer PIN, which was used to syphon N4,9m from his bank account, $15,000 worth of bitcoin, a gold necklace and a hand chain.
According to him, the robbers took him to a river, stripped him naked and beat him again. He said they also blindfolded him and took him to a room where he was kept for several hours before being made to call his parents for N16m ransom.
He said he was, however, released on February 11, at about 2.30 am. Onoaghakpote called on the Police to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.
