Woman shot dead while fetching firewood in Benue

A woman in Benue State has been shot dead in Yelewata community of Guma Local Government Area.

Witnesses said the incident occurred barely 24 hours after gunmen razed houses and maimed people in some communities of Kastina-Ala LGA.

The Chairman of Guma LGA, Caleb Aba, told our correspondent on Thursday via telephone that gunmen waylaid the woman in Yelewata around 5pm and shot her, killing her instantly.

Mr Aba said the woman had gone to a bush to fetch firewood when the gunmen accosted her.

The police spokesperson in the state, SP Catherine Anene, did not respond to calls and an SMS on the incident.
