FG launches biosecurity policy, action plan 2022-2026

In its bid to protect the environment, human health, and socio-economic development, the Federal Government Tuesday launched the new National Biosecurity Policy 2022-2026. 

The Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, noted that biosecurity is more important today than ever due to the increasing threats of climate change altering the range, habitat and spread of pests and diseases.

She said: “This policy document is the product of the inputs of several NDAs, sub nationals, civil society groups, professional associations, private sector and the international communities, taking into account, our national needs.

“It aims to foster an integrated and holistic biosecurity strategy that will be implemented through one-health approach for the prevention, early detection, rapid response to bio-threats and recovery from biosecurity incidents.”

Director-General, National Biosafety Management Agency, Rufus Ebegba, said: “The adoption of the document by stakeholders attests to the fact that nothing is impossible if Nigeria wants to achieve.”
