NAFDAC impounds 80 bags of unhealthy wheat in Gombe

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Friday said it had confiscated 80 bags of unhealthy wheat in Gombe State.

NAFDAC coordinator in the state, Mr James Agada, told newsmen alongside the state’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr Julius Ishaya, that the wheat was treated with insecticide meant for use on seedlings, saying it is not healthy for public consumption.

He said the investigation revealed that the suspect, Adamu Hassan, 32 was selling the wheat at a low price to unsuspecting members of the public for consumption.

“A market value of the wheat goes for over N1000, but he is selling between N200 to N300. The public was already consuming insecticide treated wheat. This is something that is supposed to be planted in the farm; not for consumption,” Agada said.

He added that the Anchor Borrower Programme (ABP) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was boldly written on the bags, which were meant for farmers, “but was however being sold to the public at a subsidised rate.”
