Court remands mother of student who beat up Ogun teacher

A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ado in Ado Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Thursday remanded Mrs Elizabeth Joseph, mother of Joshua Joseph, an SS3 Student of Toyan High School, Ere, who allegedly beat up a teacher.

The student, his mother and some hired thugs had on Tuesday stormed the secondary school and brutalised about three teachers.

Our correspondent gathered that the student identified as Joshua Joseph had earlier been prevented from entering the class because of his hairstyle.

Daily Trust reports assault on teachers in the state has remained unabated despite the mandatory undertaking forms recently signed by parents, as part of the efforts to curb the act assault in the state.

Following the latest attacks, Police on Wednesday arrested parents of the student, Oyedele Nutai Joseph and his wife Elizabeth Joseph over the incident.

The Police Spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the parents who felt that the teacher has no right to beat their son for any reason mobilized some thugs and stormed the school.

“On getting to the school, they descended heavily on the teacher, beat and injured him. They also damaged the back screen of a Toyota Corolla with registration number LSD 395 FV belonging to another teacher of the school Jolayemi Sunday,” he said.

And on Thursday, the suspects were arraigned by the police before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ado Odo.

Magistrate B.O Abdul Salam having listened to the charge read by the Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Adeyemo, expressed disappointment over the attitude some parents who followed their wards to school to attack teachers for discipling their wards.

“Why are these children attacking their teachers ? If some drastic measure is not taken, these are the kind of youths that will become a menace not only to their teachers, but also to police officers and court officials, if they get a judgement that is not satisfactory to them.

“If my parents had followed me to my school to fight my teachers will I be on this bench today?”, he said.

She admitted that the offence committed was a bailable, however, ordered the suspects be remanded in Abeokuta and Ilaro Correctional Home, while the student said to be at large be produced by the next court sitting.

The court, therefore, adjourned till February 15, 2022.
