AFCON 2021: Iheanacho on target as Eagles beat Egypt

Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on winning after they defeated seven-time champions Egypt 1-0 in Group D opener in Garoua, Cameroon on Tuesday.

Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho gave the Super Eagles the crucial lead after just 30 minutes of action with a brilliant volley inside the opponents’ box.

Despite the absence of striking trio of Victor Osimhen, Emmanuel Dennis and Odion Ighalo, the three-time African champions had the driving sit, wiith Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy forced to crucial saves on few occasions.

After finding themselves on the back foot, the Egyptians led by Liverpool star Mohamed Salah struggled to split the solid Super Eagles defence as Iheanacho continued to threaten before the half time.
