AFCON: Super Eagles depart today, vow to return with trophy

The Super Eagles will today depart the shores of the country to Cameroon as the quest for the fourth continental trophy begins.

The three-time Africa champions have been in camp in Abuja and have also vowed to bring home the trophy won in 2013.

Speaking during a virtual press conference, Captain Ahmed Musa said the mission of the team is to go and win the title in Cameroon and not sightseeing.

Musa, alongside Kenneth Omeruo, was part of the 2013 AFCON winning team under late Stephen Keshi and hoped that Super Eagles win the bi-annual competition for the fourth time.

“This squad has been together for a while, we are ready to compete for the AFCON. We are 100 per cent ready. We are not going to Cameroon to see the beauty of the country, we are going to the AFCON to win.

The last time we won, the reception was huge and we want to feel such again,” he said.

His position was reechoed by Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who has assured Nigerians that they will do well and make the country proud.

Awoniyi, who made his debut in the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic, was listed among the 28 players that will fly the country’s flag in the 33rd edition of the tournament.

“For us, it is to go there and do everything for the country. We just finished another training session, getting there step by step and when the time comes we will deliver for the country.

“It’s been a great session, two times a day since we resumed camp, different drills getting us to the rhythm and getting us ready for the games,” he said.

The group stage will see Nigeria in Group D taking on Egypt on January 11; Sudan on January 15, and Guinea Bissau on January 19. All three matches will take place at the Adjia Stadium in Garoua.
