Why we seek end to violence against women – FIDA

The outgoing Country Vice President of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Rhoda Tyoden, has explained the idea behind the recent programme challenging acts against women.

FIDA in December embarked on a 16-day advocacy programme themed ‘Orange the World: End Violence Against Women Now’.

Speaking, Tyoden said the 16 days were being used around the world to create more awareness on the issue, which has been worsened by the pandemic.

“Out of 10 cases of gender-based violence, 8 to 9 are women,” she said.

“I am not saying that it is not happening around men, maybe because of the patriarchal system we have, men think that it is something that should not be heard.”

Estimates published by the World Health Organisation indicate that globally, about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime, these statistics are certainly worrisome and cannot be ignored.
