61 years after, GGSS Shekara holds maiden AGM

Sixty-one years after its establishment, one of the oldest girls’ schools in Kano, Government Girls Secondary School, Yakasai, popularly known as ‘Shekara’ has held the first Annual General Meeting (AGM) of its old students association.

The Chairperson, Shekara Old Girls Association (SHOGA), Binta Bashir, said the present state of the school made it necessary for the old students to reunite and form the association in order to move their alma mater to the status of historic schools in Kano.

Binta lamented how the school was suffering from lack of basic amenities such as potable water and infrastructure.

She called on her colleagues and well-wishers to assist in addressing the challenges of the long-standing academic institution.

While commending the effort of the old students, former Speaker, Kano House of Assembly, who is also a former teacher of the school, Yusuf Abdullahi Atta, called on parents to do the needful towards assisting the school as among them were affluent individuals who could solve the problems of the school without waiting for the government to do everything.

Among the school’s alma mater are the wife of the former Nigeria’s President, late General Sani Abacha, Maryam Abacha, former Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayya Ahmad Rufa’i, former commissioners, heads of ministries and parastatals, directors and many successful businesswomen among others.
