National Assembly Commission urges legislative aides to acquire skills

The National Assembly Service Commission on Wednesday charged legislative aides to equip themselves with necessary knowledge and skills that would enable them to discharge their responsibilities to lawmakers effectively.

The Executive Chairman of NASC, Ahmed  Amshi, gave the charge while monitoring the 2021 induction/orientation programme for the aides to senators and House of Representatives members in both chambers.

Speaking on the theme of the orientation: ‘Equipping Legislative Aides with the Tools to Meet the Challenges of Legislative Business in the 21st Century’, Amshi said the lawmakers could not afford to keep their workforce dormant.

He said the commission was working towards improving the welfare and well-being of the workers through adjustment in the minimum wages of the aides.

“The increase is just for level 10 downward. The lower level will see something meaningful,” Amshi said.

“That is why we give this training a great priority and we try to give qualitative training something that will be useful to the person. We conduct this training annually so that it improves the capacity of legislative aides.

“This is particularly for the legislative aides, even the staff themselves. We are also making an effort to improve their capacity.

“The world is changing, there are so many new advances in technology. And I think it is high time we bring our personnel to meet up with this high changing demand of technology in the world,” he said.
