Yuletide: IGP threatens to deal with officers engaging in unethical behaviors

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, on Monday, threatened to deal with officers caught or reported for any infractions while carrying out their duties during the festive periods.

Baba also described the year 2021 as the most challenging year for security agents, especially police officers, due to the rise of insecurity across the country.

The Police chief stated this in Abuja during the end of the year meeting with senior officers of the force from the rank of Commissioner of Police (CP) and above.

Baba said he had directed the Monitoring Unit, X-Squad, and Force Provost Marshal to jointly commence a special operation with a view to monitoring police conduct across the country.

According to him, “This operation would be well-coordinated, and any personnel caught involving himself or herself in any unethical acts will be firmly dealt with.

“If such misconduct results from supervisory negligence, the line supervisors could also be held vicariously liable and dealt with”.

He also urged the personnel of the force to brace up for the anticipated internal security challenges that next year would usher in.

Baba added, “These challenges centre largely on the potent threat posed to internal security by the activities of bandits, secessionist elements, kidnapping syndicates, and other highly organised criminals.

“The challenges were compounded by the #EndSARS violence of the preceding year, which weakened the morale and operational base of the Force, following the massive destruction of Police operational assets, and unfortunate deaths and injuries to Police officers that attended the violent protests.”
