BUK initiates on-campus jobs for students, engages 125

Bayero University Kano (BUK) has initiated a scheme for on-campus part-time jobs in which it has so far employed 125 students.

According to the university, the initiative was an effort to assist the students; promote their welfare and relieve them of financial difficulties.

Speaking while launching the scheme, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, said it was the first of its kind introduced in the university as part of his promise to improve the welfare of the students.

He said the scheme would help the students to earn legitimate money by rendering some services to the university.

According to the vice-chancellor, the employed students would be engaged in various assignments such as monitoring and supervision of the university’s facilities, surveillance to ensure a secure environment, cleanliness, as well as other menial jobs that might arise.

He said that each student would take home N15,000 monthly, subject to being cleared by their supervisor after meeting the necessary requirements.

The vice-chancellor, however, drew the attention of the engaged students to the fact that they were the pioneer beneficiaries of the scheme, as such, they should do whatever they could to protect the interest of the university.

Prof. Abbas also disclosed that plans were underway to establish a students’ skills acquisition centre in the university.

“The centre, which will be free of charge for any interested student of the university, would allow participants to learn some trades such as tailoring, make-up as well as a beauty salon and other skills which will go a long way in helping the students to be self-reliant after graduation,” the vice-chancellor said.
