Commotion in Lagos as truck crushes students to death

There was confusion in the Ojodu axis of Lagos State, on Tuesday, after a truck crushed some students to death.

The affected students, who were from a Secondary School in the area, were heading home after school hours when the truck rammed into them.

The driver of the truck, which reportedly suffered brake failure, fled the scene but he was later arrested.

Angered by the development, students blocked a major road in the area and vandalised vehicles, especially trucks.

This compounded the traffic jam on the ever-busy road which links to Agege, Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja and other parts of the city.

In a bid to disperse the crowd, policemen from a nearby station, fired teargas into the air but the protesters refused to back down.

As of the time of Lagos State, the number of affected students was unknown.

Commenting on the incident, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lagos, Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, said the truck lost control at Grammar School Bus stop, along Ogunnusi road, Lagos.

He said the accident, which led to the deaths of an unverified number of students, left many persons injured.

“The men of FRSC were called upon by passerby to help intervene after the crash had happened.”

“About seven (7) of the victims were rescued and immediately taken to Lagos State Emergency Centre Ojota by FRSC personnel while another road user helped in carrying about seven (7) also to the same emergency centre.

“The general public should disregard the disgruntled information been circulated by some unscrupulous element that FRSC men caused the crash.

“We want to place on record that our men were not in any way involved in the cause of the crash as patrol activities was not ongoing along that axis as at the time of the crash.

“The FRSC however wishes to commiserate with the families of the deceased, that God will grant them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss. He also prayed that the injured will recuperate fast.”
