Witnesses said the lecturer was driving in his car when the armed assailants accosted him and shot him dead.
The incident sparked a protest yesterday by youths of the community who blocked the road for several hours and demanded that security be beefed up in the area.
A resident of the area who preferred not to be mentioned told our correspondent by phone that the Eke-Ugbokolo road had become notorious for robbery activities.
He said there had been several instances when people were either killed or robbed at gunpoint in the area.
The resident expressed worry over the rate of attacks around the area despite its proximity to a police outpost.
He said youths in the area staged a peaceful protest to demand immediate deployment of more policemen to Okpokwu.
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Benue, DSP Catherine Anene, said she had not yet received any report on the matter.
“I have sent messages to the DPO of the area and awaiting response,” Anene said.
