The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, has awarded scholarship to five orphans from various departments in the institution.
Presenting the cheques to the awardees, the Chairman of the ASUU Chapter, Dr. Gbolahan Bolarin said the gesture, which is the first, was to help students whose parents have died and have found it difficult to finance their studies.
“We are doing this to reduce the rate of drop out of orphans. These children, despite that they are brilliant ended up not graduating because of financial constraints. So as teachers, we are with them everyday, interact with them and we know their challenges. That’s why we are doing this to help some of them who meet the criteria for selection.” He said.
Dr Bolarin called on the well-to-do individuals to identify students with such challenges and assist them to avoid the dropout of brilliant students.
The awardees include Adeniran Mariam Adebukola from the Department of Mathematics with 4.78 CGPA, Omotinuwe Rokeeb Oyeniyi (4.79) and Ladapo Modupe Ezekiel with 4.77 CGPA among others.
