IGP calls for funding of special operations

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has called for proper funding of the newly created Special Operations Account of the Nigerian Police in the 2022 budget.

He made the call during the budget defence presentation before the Joint Committee on Police Affairs of the National Assembly.

He said this would give the police ability to quickly respond to unexpected national security emergencies and strengthen ongoing special operations in many parts of the country.

He said if the Nigeria Police Special Operational and Tactical Units, the Intelligence Response Team, the Special Forces and the Special Tactical Squads were adequately funded, the critical internal security operations would be enhanced.

He urged the National Assembly to remove the Nigeria Police from the envelope budgetary system to enable it have access to more funds to meet its operational and administrative requirements.

He also called for the prompt and adequate release of funds appropriated for the Police in the 2022 budget.

He said funds approved in their previous budgets were not being released on time to attend to their pressing needs which he said was affecting their ability to effectively discharge their duties.
