W/African college decries poor state of Nigeria’s medical laboratories

The West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science has expressed concern about the poor state of laboratory infrastructure and equipment in Nigeria.

The Secretary-General of the college, Godswill Okara Secretary-general of the college raised the concern in Abuja Sunday while briefing newsmen about the 2021 regional scientific conference and induction of elected fellows of the college holding from November 15 to 17.

 According to him, till date, there is no level 4 biosafety laboratory in Nigeria despite the country’s financial capacity.

He said the college, in collaboration with the Society of Cellular Pathology Scientists of Nigeria, invited an eminent cytologist from South Korea, Prof. No Won Park, on a voluntary educational service to upscale the knowledge and skills of medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria. 

Registrar, Medical laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Tosan Erhabour, said for Nigeria’s health system to key into the African continental free trade zone, all medical laboratories in the country had been given up to 2025 to be accredited or phased out.
