Farmers in Kano have expressed delight over bumper harvest from a new maize variety donated to them by a seedling company for demonstration at the commencement of this year’s rainy season.
The hybrid maize seed, SC-649, from SEED CO seedling company has the capacity to produce between eight to 10 metric tons per hectare, which is equivalent to 80 to 100 sacks of maize, the farmers testified.
Speaking during ‘Farmer’s Field Day’ organised by the company at Tamawa Village of Rimingado Local Government Area of Kano State, the farmers said they gained double of what they used to harvest in the past as a result of the new variety, adding that with seeds of that kind they would soon address food shortage in the country.
Auwal Maidabino, a retired civil servant now farmer said that with the introduction of the hybrid SC-649, maize farming is now guaranteed with bumper harvest and that it would elevate farmers from the lower class to the peak as a result of the profits they would gain.
Another farmer, Baiti Idris said with seeds of this kind, there would be a rapid increase in food production in line with the present administration’s efforts towards self-reliance and food security.
The Managing Director, Seed Co, Mr. Kolade Dada represented by the Regional Sales Manager, Junaid Muhktar said Kano SC-649 has great potential and takes 100-110 days to mature with the potential to yield 8-10 tons per hectare.
