Nigeria condemns coup in Sudan, arrest of civilian leaders

The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the military coup in Sudan and called for the immediate release of the Prime Minister and all political prisoners.

The coup comes just weeks before the military was supposed to hand the leadership of the council that runs the country over to civilians.

In a two paragraphs statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esther Sunsuwa, Nigeria also called for the immediate restoration of the transitional government and implementation of the agreed roadmap to return the country to constitutional democracy.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria strongly condemns the coup d’état that has taken place today in Sudan, in which the military has dissolved the civilian component of the transitional government and arrested its leaders.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls for the immediate release of the Prime Minister and all political prisoners and an immediate restoration of the transitional government and implementation of the agreed roadmap to return the country to constitutional democracy,” the statement read.

The UK’s special envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Robert Fairweather, tweeted that military arrests of civilian leaders were “a betrayal of the revolution, the transition and the Sudanese people”.

The US, UN, EU and Arab League have also expressed deep concern.

Khartoum airport is now closed, and international flights are suspended.

The coup is coming about a month after the government of President Alpha Conde of Guniea was toppled.
