Nigeria recorded 33 deaths and 125 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Sunday, data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has shown.

The NCDC, in its daily COVID-19 report said, till date, 209,298 cases had been confirmed, 197,143 discharged; while  2,837 deaths had been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The centre had, in its report on October 16, said 32 deaths reported in Lagos included backlogs from September 11.

The backlog made the number of deaths, which was  2, 769 as of October 15, to jump to 2, 804 as of October 16 and 2, 837 on Sunday. Also, an increase in the daily new cases of COVID-19 was observed in the reported data in the week.

Meanwhile, Director, Health Emergency Preparedness and Response, NCDC, John Oladejo, said COVID-19 cases increased in the country by 4.3% in week 40; while test positivity was pegged at 3.5% same week.

Speaking in Abuja yesterday during the biweekly COVID-19 update by the Ministry of Health, he said Lagos, Rivers and Edo were some of the states contributing to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the country.

He said in the last seven days Abia, Anambra, Cross, River and Edo recorded a high number of cases.

Director, Planning Research and Statistics, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Abdullahi Bulama Garba, said the federal government had set up a joint Task Force on COVID-19 vaccine racketeering.

He said the government had also directed that every ward in each local government area provide at least one COVID-19 vaccination site with a view to decentralizing the vaccination process to ensure more Nigerians have easy access to the vaccines.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, said there was a $2bn arrangement for vaccine provision that would cover Nigeria for the next seven years.
