Nigeria to lose N170trn to climate change by 2050 – ActionAid

ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has said that Nigeria will lose N170 trillion to climate change by the 2050 if urgent measures are not taken.

The Country Director of AAN, Ene Obi, said this on Friday in Dakwa, Abuja, at a press briefing to mark the 2021 International Day of Rural Women with the theme, “Rural Women Cultivating Good for All,” and launching of #EarthWalk Campaign.

Represented by the Director, Resource Mobilisation and Innovation of AAN, Andrew Mamedu, Obi said, “Climate change will cost Nigeria between six and 30 per cent of its GDP by 2050, and this is worth between $100m and $460m. This means that N38trn will be lost to climate change.

“This year, our budget is N16.39trn. This means that two years’ budget will be lost to climate change at minimum. But $460bn being the maximum, which is a total of N170trn; that is 10 years of our current national budget, would be lost to the activities of climate change in Nigeria alone by 2050.”

She said #EarthWalk was launched globally by 33 countries to walk 40,000km; the circumference of the earth, to demand climate justice for women and their communities, especially those living on the frontline of the climate crisis.
