The Controller General of Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Halliru Nababa, has said that 970 inmates are undergoing various academic programmes in custodial facilities across the country.
The controller, who disclosed this in Abuja on Friday, said the inmates were running the programmes at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
“This is aside from the large number of inmates that sat for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) with impressive results,” he said.
He said the era of seeing custody as punitive and an end to one’s career was over, adding that the service emphasised the training of inmates in preparation for their reintegration into society as useful and responsible citizens.
