9 dead, 3 rescued as car plunges into Kano dam

Nine people have been confirmed dead, three others rescued, while one person was declared missing as a vehicle (Golf Wagon) plunged into a dam along the Kano-Katsina road, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State on Saturday.

The incident occurred due to the fact that a tyre of the car burst which made the driver lose control, hence, the vehicle plunged into the dam which is located by the roadside.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi said on Saturday, that the service received an emergency call through one Ali Mai Faci, at 6 pm.

The PRO explained that when their men from the Gwarzo fire station reached the area at 7 pm, twelve people from Katsina state were rescued, all with unknown names.

“With a good effort from our men and local fishers, we successfully rescued three persons alive, while nine people were unconscious. We conveyed all the victims to Gwarzo General Hospital for medical attention and doctors confirmed the death of 9 people among the victims.

“Victims involved are; 2 girls of about 6 months; 4 women of about 30, 28, 27 years and 25 years old; as well as 6 men of about 48, 45, 42, 40, 35 and 28 years old.”

He added that according to an eyewitness a victim still remains in the dam.

“We will continue searching as normal. The cause of the incident is a tyre blast which led to the loss of control of the vehicle by the driver.”
