The victims were said to have carried cooked food and assorted drinks inside the bus intended to be shared at the party venue before the accident.

A source said all the drinks and food were scattered on top of the murky waters when they arrived at the scene.

“The body of a little girl was fetched out of the water dead, while others sustained wounds.

“The victims broke down in tears when local rescuers brought her dead body out,” the source said.

The South-West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident, said the fully loaded 17-seater passenger commercial bus plunged into the Oworonsoki canal with all victims rescued alive except a child of about eight years who died in the incident.

“The bus was carrying merrymakers to the Palace of King of Oworonsoki who is said to have been having a celebration.

“The residents immediately swung into action by rescuing the passengers before the arrival of responders.

“The bus was filled with already prepared assorted foods that scattered in the area,” he added.

All calls to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, were neither answered nor returned.
