Eight illegal tax collectors have been apprehended in Benue State by a task force of the Benue State Internal Revenue Services (BIRS) for mounting illegal roadblocks and extorting motorists in Vandeikya and Konshisha LGAs.
The acting Chairman of BIRS, Emmanuel Agema, a few days ago inaugurated the task force to sanitise the state of illegal tax checkpoints and arrest perpetrators of the criminal act.
This followed Governor Hyacinth Alia’s warning against increasing illegal taxation in all the markets across the state during a thanksgiving Mass and reception organised by Kunav United Development Association (KUDA) for his victory at the poll and also to celebrate his 33 years of priesthood.
The governor noted that multiple levies and illegal taxation had a negative impact on the state’s economy, stressing the need to address the situation.
