75-yr-old woman, granddaughter killed as arsonists set house ablaze in Kogi

A 75-year-old woman, Mallama Meimunat Opaluwa Sani, and her five-year-old granddaughter, have lost their lives after their house was set ablaze by unidentified arsonists at Okete-Ekwe Idah in Kogi State.

The incident was said to have occurred in the early hours of Thursday.

According to locals, the suspected arsonists came to her house and poured petrol through the window of her room and set it on fire.

The resultant inferno killed her, and her granddaughter identified as Onechejo.

One of her daughters, Hajarat Usman Sani, who was also in the room at the time of the incident, was said to be in a critical condition.

“A group of people came to the house with petrol while our grandmother was sleeping alongside her daughter and granddaughter. They poured the petrol on the house and ignited a fire,” a family member, who spoke on condition of anonimity, said.

The late woman was said to have been conferred with the title of Iye Agwuma Ata Igala in 2023.

The state police command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, said the command had yet to receive any information about the incident.
