It has been predicted that unless something is done to check the current excesses, 70 per cent of people in Kano State may be in drug abuse by 2050.

The Managing Director, Almustaqbal Psychotherapy and Counselling Services Centre, Dr Idris Salisu Rogo stated this in Tsanyawa, Kano State on Thursday, during the commissioning of land to be used in building a proposed rehabilitation centre for drug abusers.

Upon completion, the centre is planned to be the biggest of its kind in Africa.

“Presently, there are over three million drug abusers in North West states, out if which about 1.07 million are in Kano State. If we don’t make any effort to tame this menace now, about 70% of Kano State population alone could be into drug abuse,” he said.

Rogo explained that the centre expected to be completed in eight months would have the capacity to accommodate about 5,000 drug abusers who would be trained in various skills and knowledge to become better people in the society.

Also speaking at the occasion, the District Head of Tsanyawa, Alhaji Mu’awiya Abbas Sanusi commended the centre for siting the project in the area, noting that youths as leaders of tomorrow needed such rehabilitation.

Daily Trust reports that the land for the construction was donated by a philanthropist in the area, Alhaji Shehu Ashaka.
