7 things to know about Dadiyata, missing social media critic

Until she drew her last breath on Tuesday, the mother of Abubakar Idris the social media critic better known as Dadiyata, wished she set her eyes on her son.

Dadiyata went missing on August 2, 2019, when unidentified men seized him from his residence in Barnawa neighbourhood of Kaduna State.

His disappearance sparked outrage on social media, with many justifying his right to freedom of speech and demanding his release.

According to the account given by the police, Idris was returning home at about 1 a.m. when some armed men breached his house’s security, and took him away in his BMW car.

Barely three years after his disappearance, his mother died at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna, where she was being treated.

  • He was popular for his frequent denunciation of Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano State and his policies.
  • He was a lecturer at the Federal University Dutsinma, Katsina State, where he taught History of English Language
  • He was an advocate of Good Governance par excellence.
  • Dadiyata was said to be loyal to the Kwankwasiyya movement as he was critical of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
  • He was an activist, who devoted himself to that aspect, as he had no record of criminality.
  • He often tweeted condemning the non-payment of salaries in Kogi State, trolling President Muhammadu Buhari.
  • He was known for his critical stance against the ruling class, especially the ruling APC.
