650 airforce personnel to participate in combat sport

About 650 Nigerian Airforce personnel would be deployed to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State to participate in the forth coming Nigerian Air Force Inter Command Combat sports  competition scheduled to hold from April 2 to 7th 2018.

The chairman of the local organizing committee, Air Commodore Mfon Ekpoh who made this known yesterday during a press briefing added that personnel deployed to the ongoing counter insurgency operations in the North East and other internal security operations will be part of the event.
Air commodore Mfon Ekpoh  said that the competition is in line with Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar vision to promote combat fitness and spirit de corps among the personnel.
He added that the competition has significantly contributed towards the effective and efficient service delivery of the NAF as reflected in the physical fitness and mental alertness displayed by the Nigerian Air Force personnel.
He continued, “this year’s event remains the same symbol of regimentation as it is designed to test the combat readiness of personnel in a competitive manner while also promoting participation in sporting activities for enhanced combat capability”.
He said that the combat competition will include swimming, combat relay race, taekwando, tug of war and obstacle crossing.
“The event would also feature shooting exercise at the shooting range located in the Nigerian Army Barracks Abak.
Ekpoh also noted that seven teams will be participating the exercise which would include the Nigerian Air Force Headquaters, Tactical Air Command, Ground Training Command, Logistics Command and all direct reporting units in the Air Force.
He explained that the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo was chosen in recognition of the contribution of the Akwa Ibom State to the development of sports in Nigeria as well as the availability of the standard sporting facilities in Uyo stadium.
He said, “outstanding athletes during the competition will cart away medals and have an opportunity to represent the Nigerian Air Force and the nation in future championships.
