The Kano State Government through the Ministry for Women Affairs has empowered 60 street beggars in the state.
The state recently launched a programme to evacuate street beggars after many of them were arrested.

Speaking at the inauguration of the batch A of the programme, the Commissioner Ministry, Women Affairs, Dr. Zahra’u Muhammad Umar said the state government decided to empower some of the arrested beggars who are in dire need of help.
In her remarks, the wife of the Kano State Governor Hajiya Hafsat Umar Ganduje, who was represented by Commissioner, Higher Education Dr. Mariya Mahmood Bunkure, charged the beneficiaries to use the stipend judiciously, adding that the government will not tolerate street begging as it is going to prosecute any woman found begging on the street.
Beneficiaries interviewed by Daily Trust on Sunday thanked the government for the gesture, pledging to use the stipend judiciously.
