6 months after, Ogun still waiting for FG’s position on mining sites

The Commissioner for Environment, Ayo Olubori, while addressing a news conference on the forthcoming environment summit, said despite the exclusive list law, “there is still need to seek clarification on the mining sites,” adding: “Illegal mining sites are everywhere and people often parade documents purportedly from the federal government. The land belongs to the state and, as such, the exclusive list cannot be said to be superior to the state law. We wrote to the federal government about six months ago and till today, we are yet to receive any response on the matter.
“It is the state that bears responsibility of the hazards and these people are here with us. When the hazards occur, it is the state that reacts not somebody in Abuja.”
On the recent flooding which affected a community in Abeokuta-North Council Area, the commissioner said government would provide assistance of about N35 million, based on the evaluation and assessment made.
“But in the interim, we have provided palliatives for the victims,” he said.
