The Police Command in Kaduna State yesterday confirmed the death of six people during an attack by gunmen on the Emir of Potiskum, Alhaji Umaru Bubaram, on the Kaduna-Zaria Highway.
Several other people were also said to have been abducted.
The emir and one of the traditional title holders in his entourage, Sarkin Yamma Potiskum, Alhaji Gidado Ibrahim, told Daily Trust that the attack occurred yesterday at Fandatio village, near Maraban Jos around 2:00am.
But the state police command’s spokesman, Yakubu Sabo, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the incident occurred around 11.00pm Tuesday.
Sabo said four of those killed were aides of the emir; while two were commuters.
Sabo said the monarch was at the Barau Dikko Hospital in Kaduna and was “doing very well.”
Sabo said the Commissioner of Police, Umar Muri, had visited the emir at the hospital.
The command’s spokesman said investigation into the incident had commenced.
Daily Trust reports that the emir was on a national tour to traditional institutions across the northern region for the commissioning of Potiskum Central Mosque scheduled for January 18.
The emir was on his way to Zaria when he was attacked.
Speaking to Daily Trust at Barau Dikko Hospital where the emir was rushed to, Sarkin Yamma Patiskum Alhaji Gidado Ibrahim, said: “The incident was very terrible because we lost three of our men; while the two policemen attached to the emir were injured. But the Emir, Alhaji Umaru Bubaram, escaped unhurt, we thank Allah for that.”
He commended the security agencies for their prompt action during the attack and while at the hospital because State Commissioner of Police was also at the hospital to see the emir.
Before he was discharged around 12:24pm, the emir, at the emergency unit of the hospital, told Daily Trust reporter that “I’m safe, but others were killed and some injured, we have casualties in the place too, but not much”.
Residents of the area where the incident happened said the attackers blocked the highway late Tuesday night.
