The police in Ogun State have arrested six suspected members of Eiye cult group over attempted murder of the Oba of Gbokotoland in Yewa North Local Government Area, Oba G.O. Olukunle.
The suspects claimed they were invited by the son of the monarch, who the police said was currently at large.
The police spokesman in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Monday, told journalists that the monarch made a distress call to the Oja Odan Division when the suspects stormed his palace, shooting sporadically.
Oyeyemi said policemen immediately moved to the palace where they met the hoodlums still shooting.
He said policemen engaged the hoodlums in a shootout “and eventually subdued the cultists and got six of them arrested.”
The suspects are Michael Ayodele, Monday Samuel, Ademola Matthew, Hammed Jelili, Ogundele Ojeh and Sunkanmi Fadina.
He further said, “On interrogation, the suspects confessed being members of the dreaded Eiye confraternity. They also informed the police that it was the son of the oba who is now at large that invited them to come and eliminate his father because of an unresolved issue the oba has been having with his mother.”
Oyeyemi, who said the fleeing son of the oba escaped with a gun belonging to the group, added that one locally made double-barrel pistol, two live cartridges and one expended cartridge were recovered from the suspects.
Oyeyemi further said that the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, had ordered a massive manhunt for the fleeing son of the oba.
