58th Independence: Kogi governor, Bello grants 5 convicts mercy

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State on Monday, exercised his prerogative of mercy power on five convicts in the spirit of the commemoration of Nigeria’s 58th Independence Anniversary celebration.

Bello, who announced this in his Independence Day broadcast, said the decision was sequel to the recommendation of the Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and in exercise of the powers bestowed on him under Section 212 (1) a, b, c and d of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as Amended.

He said three of the convicts, Adamu Salifu, Rasaq Olarenwaju and Taiwo Yusuf who are currently at the Kirikiri Maximum Prisons, Minna Prisons and Jos Prisons respectively, had their death sentences committed to life imprisonment.

Bello said that the duo of Enejo Salihu presently at Kabba Prisons and Kabiru Bala presently at Kotonkarfe Prisons were granted pardon.

The governor while congratulating Nigerians on the occasion of the nation’s Independence Day celebration, assured that his administration would continue to work hard to bring dividends of democracy to the people.

He said the various infrastructural projects ongoing across the three senatorial districts of the state would be commissioned on the occasion of its third anniversary celebration by January 2019.

On the issue of flood, the governor disclosed that over 200,000 have been displaced across the nine flood prone local government areas of the state.

Bello said the state needs billions of naira to be able to rebuild destroyed infrastructures, rehabilitate and resettle all those that have been ravaged by the flood disaster.
