56-year-old woman arraigned over theft of day-old baby

The police said the traditional birth attendant who owns an herbal home in Agege

The Lagos Police Command has arraigned a fifty-six-year-old traditional birth attendant, Bolanle Yomi, before an Ogba chief magistrate court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing a day old baby belonging to Ajimoh Bola.

The police said the traditional birth attendant who owns an herbal home in Agege actually delivered the Bola of the baby.

According to them, the accused allegedly took the baby away to an unknown destination before she was caught following an alarm raised by the mother of the child.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Lucky Ihiehie, who asked the presiding magistrate to hand out stiff penalties to the accused, said the traditional birth attendant was arrested after the mother of the baby had raised an alarm when she could not find her child.

“My Lord, the accused took advantage of the fact that the mother of the baby was sleeping. She brought back the baby after the baby’s mother raised the alarm,” he said.

Inspector Ihiehie further alleged that the accused is the owner of the home located at Onilude Street, Atoboye area of Agege, Lagos State.

The prosecutor said the accused was arrested and detained by the police and was charged to court on the orders of the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu.

“However, during interrogation at the police station, she claimed she took the baby away in order to treat her of an undisclosed ailment without the consent of the mother,” he said.

She pleaded not guilty when she appeared in court.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs A.O. Layinka, granted her bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She was remanded in the correctional centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when she would perfect her bail conditions while the matter was adjourned until October 6, 2021, for mention.
