‘54 unserviceable vehicles worth N98.5m abandoned, rot in FRSC offices’

At least 54 unserviceable vehicles, ambulances and power bikes worth N98.5 million have been abandoned and rotting away across offices of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) nationwide, according to a federal government’s audit report.

The 2021 audit report sent to the National Assembly by the Office of the Auditor General for the Federation and released on its website in December, said the vehicles were abandoned across the FRSC commands and its headquarters in Abuja without being valued and auctioned as required.

The report said the reason for not auctioning the abandoned vehicles was not provided, adding that the anomalies could be attributed to weaknesses in the internal control system at the FRSC.

The report noted that the risks of such action include loss of revenues to the federation, conversion of government property to personal use and waste of assets.

The report said FRSC’s response to the query was not satisfactory and therefore recommended that the agency should justify to the Public Account Committee of the National Assembly the reason for not disposing off the unserviceable vehicles, ambulances and power bikes of the corps valued at N98,508,850.00.

It recommended that for failure to provide justification, the FRSC should be sanctioned for gross misconduct as contained in paragraph 3129 of the Financial Regulations, 2009.
