An Area Court in Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, has dissolved the Islamic marriage between Ajisegiri Balikis and Saadu Jimoh due to an unmatched genotype.
Presiding Judge Hammad Ajumonbi ruled that since both parties agreed they were no longer in love, there was no reason to maintain the union.
The court granted Balikis custody of their two children, while allowing Jimoh unrestricted access. He was ordered to pay N18,000 monthly for their feeding and maintenance, along with their school fees and medical expenses. Balikis must observe a three-month iddah (waiting) period before remarrying.
In her petition, Balikis cited persistent misunderstandings, Jimoh’s irresponsible behaviour, and lack of love and trust as reasons for the divorce, all stemming from concerns about their children’s genotypes. She revealed that their first child is AS, while their second child was found to be SS, which led to frequent illnesses.
Balikis explained, “My parents told me my genotype is AA, but I have never done an official test. I informed my husband before marriage that I was AA, while he claimed to be AS.” She alleged that after discovering the children’s genotypes, Jimoh became neglectful, failing to provide food or health support.
In response, Jimoh expressed that he trusted Balikis’s claim of being AA due to her education. He stated, “I was angry because her auntie was our matchmaker, but I have accepted my fate. On Oct. 17, my father-in-law asked my wife to move out, and all efforts to resolve the issue failed.” He added that he was subsequently reported to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, which mandated him to pay N10,000 monthly for the children’s needs.
