Five persons were reported to have died when their car veered off the road and plunged into Omi river (canal) in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.
An eyewitness said the incident happened about 12noon on Saturday between Omi and Ejiba town.
Locals said after frantic efforts, five lifeless bodies of the victims were picked up from the canal, saying that efforts are ongoing to pull out the car from the canal as at the time of filing this report.
The victims were said to be returning to Abuja after attending a burial ceremony in the area when the incident occurred.

The chairman of Yagba West Local Government, Pius Kolawole, who visited the scene of the incident, blamed the accident on over-speeding and drunk-driving, saying five people lost their lives in the process.
The sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Stephen Dawlung, who confirmed the incident, said he was expecting detailed reports of the incident from the operatives in that axis of the state.
