The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Benue State yesterday said that a total of 44 people have died in 96 different road crashes within the state this year.
The State sector commander, Chidiebere Benjamin Nkwonta, also said 325 persons had sustained injuries from the separate crashes which occurred between January and June this year.
He blamed more than 60 percent causes of the accidents on over-speeding, noting that the delay in implementing the speed limit device to regulate motorists on Nigerian roads was being caused by a need to wait till the National Assembly launched it.
Nkwonta identified the Kanshio-Welfare quarters road in Makurdi as having the highest incident of over 30 percent of all crashes in the state. He pointed out other accident black spots as Makurdi-Abinsi-Gboko, Daudu-Kadarako and Otukpa hills-Obollo highways.
