There was jubilation in Igbo-Ukwu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State as over 400 people got free medical treatment.

They were treated after undergoing laboratory tests and also given talks on BP management and  other medical challenges.

The care was provided by a non-governmental organisation, Dona-Maureen Foundation.

Speaking at the occasion, the sponsor and founder of the foundation, Dr. Maureen Umemmuo-Umeakuewulu, said she chose to reach out to the poor in the town in memory of her late husband, Donatus Umeakuewulu, who died 10 years ago.

Dr. Umemmuo, who is an obstetric and gynaecological practitioner at the National Hospital Abuja and Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, said she wanted to reach poor people in the village who didn’t have access to quality medical care.

“We gave drugs that will last for one month to those people suffering from hypertension, that will help them stabilise their BP and sugar level,” she said

According to her, BP and cervical cancer, like others, were among diseases contributing to the high mortality rate in the country.
