4 killed as rival cult gangs fight over politician’s cash gift

About four persons have reportedly lost their lives at Swali axis of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, as suspected rival cult groups clashed over the sharing of money given by politicians from the area.

This is coming barely two days after the Yenagoa community placed a ban on cult activities in the area.

According to a community source, those killed were suspected to be members of the two rival cult groups in the area known as ‘Dey-well and Bobos.’
Daily Trust gathered that while three persons were killed at Swali community, one was gunned down in the early hours of Sunday along Osiri road, Ekeki community in the heartbeat of Yenagoa.

The recent upsurge in cult clashes in Yenagoa metropolis has created fears amongst residents of the city, who most times remain indoors to avoid being robbed.

Residents have called on the Bayelsa State Government to take the issue of security seriously and curtail the rising clashes in the state.

Confirming the incident, police spokesman in the state, SP Asinim Butswat, said the operatives had arrested four suspects in connection with the cult clashes.

He however said two cultists died during the clash.

He said, “We have arrested four suspects in connection with the cult clashes, while two suspected cult members died during the clash. Investigation is ongoing.”
