4 die as canoe capsizes in Borno

Four persons have lost their lives following when a canoe capsized in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Borno State Police spokesman, ASP Kenneth Daso, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday.

He said, “A report was received from a good Samaritan at the Dikwa Divisional Police headquarters about a distressing canoe accident that occurred on September 23, 2024, at approximately 1530 hours. The accident took place in the Bakassi community, located between Mafa and Dikwa along Maiduguri Road.

“The canoe, which was carrying many passengers, capsized in floodwaters, leading to the unfortunate deaths of four women.

The deceased, all from Bulabulin Ward in Dikwa, have been identified as Ya Mallum Shettima, Maimuna Akura, Umira Alhaji Bulama and Yagana Bulama Kawu.

“The victims were immediately transported to Dikwa General Hospital, where a doctor confirmed them dead. Their bodies have since been released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.”

The Commissioner of Police in Borno, M. L. Yusufu, has urged residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to exercise extreme caution during this period and report any emergencies promptly.
